A v Hamble Youth (League) L 0-6

Forget the scoreline (if you can!). Ben, Curt, David, Jason, Matty, Ricky, Sam, Steven, Will - stand up and take a bow! Come match day, 1 player was taken ill, 1 turned up injured and couldn't play and 1 didn't turn up at all. The remaining players gave their all throughout the match and can be proud of themselves - all their supporters fully agreed.

Details to follow.

H v Hamble Club (League) L 0-7

Although creating more chances than recently, Mansel failed to convert any of them and payed for this at the other end.

Mansel lost the toss and kicked off into the wind. Ball through from Craig found Ben, on to Alex, who slipped, allowing Hamble to clear. Hamble worked their way down the line before Matty cleared. A Hamble free kick saw a shot go wide. Ben put in a ball to Alex, part cleared, picked up by Sam, knocked across to Aaron, forced wide and his pass was caught by the wind and went out. Hamble broke down the wing, players well-marked in the centre but one Hamble player free on the far side to receive the ball and slot home (9). Aiden up to Ben, trying to battle through, ball fell to David but then cleared. Ben and Aaron nearly broke through then Steven into action to save. Long kick headed on by Alex but cleared. Cross from David saw Ben just beaten to it by their 'keeper. Hamble attack, Mansel unable to clear, fell to 2 players unmarked, one of whom lifted it over Steven for the second (16). Attempted ball from Sam to Ben kicked clear by their 'keeper; Hamble attack cleared by Aidan; Aidan on to Sam, through to Alex, well-tackled; save by Steven at the expense of a corner, resulting in a shot into the side netting; Sam across to Ben - crowded out; Aaron broke up another attack; Hamble break stopped by Steven coming out quickly, up to Matty, run on and shot - wide. Jason stopped another attack, up to Alex, forced a throw, on to Ben, crossed but no-one in the middle. High ball in saw a collision between the Hamble centre forward and Steven and, although the ball ended up in the net, Mansel were given the free kick. A Mansel attack broke down and allowed Hamble to break away quickly, finding 1 player on his own and able to finish well (32). Mansel kick off saw Sam set up Ben for a shot - wide. Another quick break by Hamble and the ball was again in the net (35). More Hamble pressure, Steven pushing a shot out for a corner, then parrying the cross before Aidan cleared; scramble clear by the defence; Mark clearing well. Mansel eventually managed to work the ball away and Ben got in a shot, although high and wide. Aidan then set up Ben for another chance, but lobbed just wide. Hamble finished the half with another corner and shot, off target this time.

Playing with the wind in the second half, a drop kick from Steven found Ben but Hamble managed to just clear for a corner, taken wide to Jason, shot in but put out by Ben. A Hamble corner fell to Matty but his pass was just too long for Jason chasing down the wing. Hamble on the attack, save by Steven; clearance by Mark then Craig. Matty and Ben nearly worked their way through; Mansel free kick into the box taken by their 'keeper. Yet another Hamble attack, good shot hitting the crossbar and the defender's attempted header clear finding only another attacker who volleyed home for the fifth (49). After another wave of attacks by Hamble, Mansel broke out with a ball from Mark to Sam, on to Ben who put it just too far for Alex but Matty was able to recover, back to Ben, shot wide. Craig had to go off after twisting his ankle chasing back after an attacker. Alex broke away, passed on to Ben who put in a quick cross, finding Jason who had chased up to support but his header was straight to their 'keeper. Another save by Steven and then Ben was outnumbered. A long high ball by Hamble was chased by an attacker and two defenders, the Hamble player managing to force the ball between the defenders and then poke home (60). A run by Alex came to nothing, then Mansel forced a corner, taken well by Alex but Hamble cleared. A right wing attack by Hamble, cut back just too far from a defender allowing their forward to knock home (75). Matty broke up another attack, then Steven was out quickly to save at the forward's feet. Mansel won a free kick in a promising position but wasted it with a high wide shot.

Mansel found it difficult against the wind in the first half but tried hard. The second half saw Craig having to go off and both Aaron and Matty carrying injuries and gamely giving their all.

A v Bitterne (League) L 0-7

Missing David - recovering from concussion sustained the previous week, late arrival of 2 defenders and our touchline reporter missing her first game since 1998, Mansel battled well in the first half but again collapsed in the second.

The first goal was conceded when 2 defenders missed a through ball, allowing a Bitterne player the chance to slot home in the far corner (25). A right wing cross led to a scramble in the area before the second goal was prodded in (32). Matty Manock then suffered a knock just before half time and was unable to continue, being sorely missed in the second half.

5 more goals in the second half as Mansel were unable to get the ball forward and keep it there, Bitterne scoring on 45, 52, 54, 59 and 72 minutes.

Mansel are unable to get the ball up front and keep it there, creating very few chances. Thus again their opponents are constantly on the attack and it is not surprising the defence tires in the second half.

A v Fair Oak (League) L 0-10

Mansel started with only 10 players and battled gamely throughout the first half, nearly taking the lead when Sam then Will just failed to force the ball home. With David off for treatment, Fair Oak took the lead in the 34th minute.

Mansel tired in the second half, and Fair Oak were refreshed by bringing on two substitutes. Two quick goals (43 and 49) extended their lead. Mid way through the half, David received a nasty kick on the forehead while defending a corner and took no further part in the game. The nine remaining players were understandably pulled all over the place and there was a steady procession of goals (65, 68, 70, 75, 77, 78, 79) as Fair Oak made the most of their numerical superiority.

Mansel were unfortunate to go a goal down in the first half, but their efforts tired them and were just overrun in the second half, especially when they went down to nine. All the players can be commended for their efforts as they gave their all for most of the match.

H v Oakwood 'A' (Cup) L 1-8

Second division Oakwood scored 2 goals in the first four minutes to pave the way to Cup victory.

A long ball out of defence found an attacker, who burst through the Mansel back four and scored the opener (2). Steven beat down an Oakwood corner, cleared by Craig. Ricky fed Aidan, cleared to Aaron, who won a free kick, headed on by David then Ricky but Ben was beaten to the ball. Oakwood broke down the left wing, crossed, shot home (4). Desperate defending by Aidan, David and Matty but Oakwood still managed to get a header in - just wide. A ball from David to Ricky was intercepted, Aaron back to cover and clear. Matty and Mark broke up further attacks. An Oakwood shot wide; save by Steven; good blocks by Craig then Aaron. Aidan set Ricky away but outnumbered; Curt and Ricky broke forward, back to David, on to Ricky, out for a Mansel throw - to Ben, across to David, tackled and cleared. Oakwood broke forward, stopped by Craig for a throw then forced a corner, straight to Steven. Another cross cut out by Steven; Ben up to Aidan, forced a throw, crossed into the area, shot by David wide; Oakwood attack, cross, pull back and simple tap in for the third (18). More Oakwood pressure, Steven saving at the expense of a corner - headed straight in (20). Another corner headed clear by David; clearance by Curt; good tackle by Aaron, up to Aidan, tackled, ball run down the right wing, crossed and headed straight in (22). Aidan set up Ben for a shot - saved; Oakwood break down the wing again but the cross went over; Aidan on to David, through to Curt, on to Ricky, cross picked up by Oakwood, broke down the wing, cross, shot over. Oakwood free kick held by Steven; two strong tackles by Matty to clear; Jason stopping another attack; Mansel freekick saw another shot from Ben held by their 'keeper; corner cleared by Mark; Aaron forcing a goal kick; Mark blocked another shot; David almost broke through; Oakwood through one-on-one, Steven pushing away for a corner, which led to another shot over; Mansel free kick headed clear; Aaron making good progress down the wing before being crowded out; Oakwood corner saw another shot in, cleared by Matty; Matty pass up to Curt, run on, over to Ricky, pushed just too far in front of himself and cleared; another shot wide by Oakwood.

The second half started with more Oakwood pressure - a corner cleared by Jason, another shot cleared by Jason, Aaron fouled stopping another attack, header cleared by Aidan. A Mansel throw saw Aidan breaking down the wing, on to Ricky, but well tackled. Another Mansel throw saw David heading on to Ricky, but again forced away as Oakwood broke away, only to be stopped by Craig. Two quick free kicks, the first by Aidan went to their 'keeper, then the same at the other end as an Oakwood kick went to Steven. Craig, Mark and Aaron in the thick of the action in defence, battling to keep Oakwood out; shot saved by Steven; Jason clearing; Matty stopping well. Aidan chased an Oakwood back header but just beaten to it by their 'keeper; Ben out to Curt, on and cross - taken by their 'keeper; cross by David which Curt couldn't quite reach; Curt through to David, good cross, no-one there; Ben just failed to get to a cross by Aidan; Oakwood shot initially blocked by Mark then shot wide; Oakwood cross, attacker just got in front of a defender and knocked home (59). Aidan put the ball in the area, Sam just got to it but a scramble saw their 'keeper claim it. A long clearance by Mansel saw Ben manage to nip in between 'keeper and defender to score Mansel's consolation goal (62). Aidan and Ben nearly forced a way through before Oakwood made it 7 when Mark and an attacker chased a through ball towards the Mansel goal and an attempted clearance found the back of the net (64). Another Oakwood corner headed wide; Matty broke up another attack, on to David, through to Aidan, high cross taken by their goalie. A good break right from the back by Aaron set up Aidan, who shot over. Ben picked up a goal kick, fed Aidan, forced wide, ball across the area, cleared. A ball through the middle by Oakwood saw an attacker beat Steven to it and slot it past him for the eighth (70). Matty broke up an attack and found Sam, who put a good ball up to Aidan but he was judged offside. Long ball from Steven let Aidan have another shot -saved; similar long ball saw David break into the area before the ball was cleared. Another stop by Aaron, on to Ben but his attempted cross to Aidan was cut out. Another good clearance upfield by Matty to Aidan, forced away for a throw, eventually cleared.

Oakwood carried out the basics well - passing, backing up, making themselves available and covering - and made Mansel pay. There were a lot of reasonable individual performances, especially by Aaron, Craig and Mark at the back and David and Matty in midfield, but Mansel just couldn't put any sustained team work together, nor support the front players in numbers.

A v Locks Heath (League) L 0-8

Mansel managed to hold Locks Heath to one goal in the first half, then fell apart in the second half.

Attempted ball from Curt through to Ben - just too long. Curt then broke up an attack, Sam picking up the ball and putting it into the area, headed out, back in by Aidan, collected by their 'keeper. Craig stopped another attack, then a Locks Heath player just failed to get on the end of a through ball. Mark part stopped another attack, Craig eventually forced to concede a corner, which was not properly cleared and saw a high shot whizz past Steven for the opener (5). Aaron tried to force his way out of defence and was fouled, the free kick from David finding Ben, but he was outnumbered. Another break by Locks Heath cleared by Craig for a throw in, followed by a second which saw a header into the side netting. Mansel managed to eventually scramble clear another corner, then Steven got a strong hand on a shot. More Locks Heath pressure repelled; Aaron cleared up the wing to Ben, on to Ricky, well tackled. Another scramble in the Mansel area cleared, then survived a further corner. A Mansel goal kick was picked up by an attacker, run back in but shot just wide. Locks Heath corner, part cleared, lobbed back in, punched out by Steven, shot wide. Another corner for Locks Heath, taken short but Ben was alert and cleared. Mansel managed to force a corner themselves, well taken by Ben, in by Ricky but saved. More pressure from Locks heath - shot just wide, corner cleared by Aaron, shot wide. Ben and Ricky almost broke through then normal service by the home side - shot wide, long shot taken by Steven, another save, Steven kicked clear, Jason conceding a corner - cleared by Curt up to Sam but stopped well. A high lob taken by Steven, free kick headed clear by David, shot wide. Good tackle by Aaron, up to Ben, on to Ricky, back to Ben, forced out for a Mansel corner - taken by Ben, fell to Aidan but shot just over. Goal kick picked up by Jason, through to Aidan, on to Sam, across to Ricky - shot just wide. Craig, Aaron, Steven, Mark and David making good stops at the back; ball up from Jason to Sam, down to Aidan, cross for Ricky, shot taken by their 'keeper. Succession of corners by Locks Heath just kept out, one seeing Mark clear to Ben, Craig backing up but losing out to see Locks Heath charge down and finish with another shot wide.

The second half was really a procession of goals by Locks Heath, although an early attack saw Craig, Ben and Aidan battling forward before being stopped at the expense of a free kick - driven high by Ben. David and Mark part cleared, shot back, kicked out by Steven, follow up shot wide. Good block by Curt; corner cleared by Craig; Aaron attempted clearance found Sam but well tackled; Mark tackling back well after initially losing the ball; save by Steven, long throw to Mark, up to Ben, lobbed shot just wide; good tackle by Aaron; Mansel lost the ball when advancing well, Locks Heath broke down the wing, strong low centre got tangled in a defender's legs and bounced in the net (50). Good clearance by Jason, through ball from Ricky found Ben, tackled, ball broke to Sam, outnumbered, Locks Heath breaking forward again but well stopped by Craig and David. Aaron and Craig battling to keep them out, but Locks Heath forward in numbers and a strong shot found the back of the net (55). Swarming forward again and another shot through a crowd of players made it 4-0 (59). A run down the wing, centre, headed home (62). [Steven and David then decided to swap places, unknown and unauthorised!] Kick out by David, found Steven, on to Aidan, shot saved. A ball in by Steven, taken by their 'keeper. Jason then cleared one corner; another shortly after was part cleared but driven back home for the sixth (66). Sam battled forward, cleared out to Craig, back in, taken by their 'keeper. Locks Heath forward again in numbers, a shot blocked by David but the rebound was hammered home (68). A shot by Aidan saved. Another home attack, shot blocked by David, rebound hit home again (70). [Steven ordered back in goal]. Another home attack, a shot well pushed over by Steven, corner cleared by David. Steven pushed away another shot, then Mark cleared; a shot wide; Ricky forward to Mark, tackled; home attack cleared by David; another 2 quick corners for Locks Heath saw a good save then a good block by Jason. Freekick by David found Ricky, on to Aidan, picked up by Curt, through to Mark, outnumbered. A free kick by Locks Heath, headed just over was the last action of the game.

Locks Heath picked up virtually everything in midfield, allowing them to launch attack after attack. This despite Mansel attempting to change things around after leaving gaping holes in midfield in their previous matches. Some stubborn defending helped keep Locks Heath at bay in the first half (helped by some wayward finishing) but even this became more disjointed in the second half.

A v Hamble Club (League) L 2-6

One of the worst performances ever by Mansel, especially after their efforts in the previous games.

Down to a bare minimum of 11 players to start with, let down by 2 players who had been expected but not only didn't turn up but didn't even forewarn the manager, things got worse in the second half when David was forced off injured with what turned out to be a broken wrist. Hamble Club took a 4-1 half time lead with goals in the 3rd, 16th, 17th and 39th minutes. Mansel's first goal came in the 31st minute - a long kick from Steven being picked up by Ben, who shot home from some way out.

With only pride left to play for, Mansel pulled another goal back 5 minutes into the second half, Ben scoring again with a long shot after charging down a clearance. Hamble Club added two more in the 56th and 64th minutes to run out easy winners.

Aaron, David and, especially, Matty can hold their heads high as they had outstanding games and battled throughout.

H v Worthies Sports (League) L 0-3

On a grey, wet day, Mansel battled gamely but conceded 2 late goals to make the scoreline look worse than they deserved.

The first real attack saw the Worthies 'keeper cut out a cross from Alex, then David had to be sharp at the other end, conceding a corner which was headed clear by Jason. Ben lobbed a shot just over; Worthies broke quickly from a Mansel corner and Steven blocked a shot, cleared by Matty. Sam had an effort saved; Jason, Sam and Alex nearly forced a way through; Steven stopped an attack, cleared by Aidan; Worthies pressure, Alex, Aidan then Matty all having to clear; Steven took another shot at the second attempt; Worthies broke away, shot hit the post and Steven gathered; shot from Ben, blocked, Curt following up, saved by their 'keeper; more Worthies pressure, kept out; Mansel eventually forced a corner, knocked out to Ben, on to Ricky, back to Ben, shot saved; more scrambling defence by Mansel. Then a Worthies corner came in hard and low, attacker got a shot in, wide of the defender and through into the net (31). Another shot wide by Ben; good tackle and clearance by Aaron; save from Steven; Mansel corner, part cleared, put back in by Aaron, hacked away to safety.

Second half (rain getting worse!). Worthies corner cleared by Aidan, up to Ben, forced wide and out; Ricky, Ben and Will combined nicely, creating a chance for Ben but just wide. Ben, Ricky and Sam played their way down the wing, ball back to Aaron but no-one in the middle for his cross. Worthies again hit the post, Jason putting the rebound out for a corner, which led to another scramble before Worthies shot over. Their 'keeper saved from Ben; a Mansel free kick into the box was hoofed clear; Ricky, Ben, Aaron and Matty almost played their way through; two quick Mansel corners finally saw Worthies clear long but Steven was first to the ball; Matty and Will combined well again before losing out; another Worthies shot well taken by Steven; a good ball from Will to Ben, shot, 'keeper pushed out for a corner leading to a scramble in the box before Alex shot weakly to the 'keeper. Worthies broke through, a lob over the Mansel defence and an attacker fired home (73). More pressure from Worthies led to a couple of corners, the second saw the ball cleared to just outside the area but volleyed back in and home for the third goal (77). Aidan and Steven managed to break up another attack, then Alex and Matty were stopped at the last at the other end. Matty set up Sam for a shot - just over. A clearance from Steven found Alex, headed on to Ben, lobbed just over. Right at the death, Mansel forced a corner (which saw Steven come up to try and prove he could play outfield!), resulting in a scramble at the far post before a powerful shot by Tom hit Sam and was hacked clear.

A v Hamble Youth (Challenge Cup) L 3-5

Mansel took a 2-1 lead in the first half, thanks to 2 goals from Ben. The first came from a Hamble goal kick, played straight back and hooked in to the top corner by Ben from an acute angle (7). Hamble equalised in the thirtieth minute - a right wing break followed by a good cross. Ben put Mansel ahead again - he was chasing a long through ball from Sam, the Hamble 'keeper rushed out to try and clear but his attempt rebounded off Ben and into the goal (36).

Hamble drew level again when an initial shot came back off the post and was knocked home (43). They took the lead when the defence failed to clear an attack and the ball was rammed home (55). That lead was extended following a left wing centre and an unopposed header in the centre (59). Hamble made it 5 as a corner was prodded home (71). Mansel pulled one back when Alex ran through and finished well (73), although this also saw a booking for a Hamble player, who took out Alex after the ball was in the net.

Mansel played well in the first half, deserving their lead. They failed to get going in the second, letting Hamble get right back in the match. The incident following Mansel's third goal took any shine off the game and led to a niggly final few minutes.

A v South Wonston Swifts (League) L 1-2

After a first half where Mansel hardly troubled the opposition 'keeper, they came back strongly in the second, only to lose out to yet another sloppy goal.

The first half was dominated by South Wonston. A combination of good defending by the opposition, numerous offside decisions and poor link up play restricted Mansel to very few attempts at goal. A lot of hard work by the Mansel defence managed to keep the Swifts at bay most of the time, our midfield couldn't get going properly and there was little cohesive backup for the forwards. South Wonston scored in the 18th minute - most of the defence stopped playing, appealing for handball (which appeared to be totally accidental) whilst the forwards got on with it and ran the ball in.

A better second half. Ben, Ricky and Sam combined well to force their way through but the 'keeper managed to gather the ball; Will and Curt set up Sam - his shot was blocked for a corner, cleared; Sam back in defence to head clear a Swifts' corner; Will broke clear but his final ball was too strong for Ben; long through ball, Ben shot wide; block by Steven and he gathered the follow up shot; a free kick by David into the box, clipped away from the 'keeper by Ben and Ricky was first to the ball to score the equaliser (52). Ben through on his own and eventually outnumbered; Swifts down the other end, shot hit the post and was cleared by Matty; Alex and Ricky worked the ball through, their 'keeper eventually saving a shot by Alex; shot just wide from Ricky; Swifts' corner cleared by Will; Mansel actually defending in numbers and forcing a tame shot, held by Steven; David stopping another attack at the expense of a corner, part cleared and then ending with a goal kick; Will and Ben working well together, Ricky just beaten to the cross by their 'keeper; Mansel scrambled another Swifts' attack out for a corner, taken high into the middle, knocked down and hit home (71). Another Swifts' attack stopped at the expense of a corner, this time cleared by David up to Ricky, on to Ben, well-tackled. Aaron set up a shot for Ricky - into the side netting; Ben must have been watching as he did exactly the same shortly after. Another save by Steven; Junior up to Ben, forced wide and shot taken easily by their 'keeper; Mansel free kick led to a scramble in the Swifts' area but the ball was eventually cleared; South Wonston on the attack, part stopped by David but a follow up shot went just wide.

A disappointing first half, but a good second half and Mansel were unlucky not to get something from an entertaining and good-spirited match.

H v Hamble Youth (League) L 3-5

Mansel pulled back to 3-3 from 0-3 down before losing 3-5.

Straight from kick off, Ricky broke through and evaded a couple of tackles before shooting just wide. Aiden set up another chance for Ricky which was cleared. Mansel managed to scramble away a couple of quick Hamble corners, followed by more Hamble pressure. Aaron cleared to Ben, who set up Sam for a shot - saved. A fast break by Hamble saw Steven smothering the ball. Another Hamble attack, the defence slow to cover and the ball was fired into the net (10). Alex and Aidan worked the ball forward for Ben, whose shot rebounded for Alex to try another - saved. Another dangerous Hamble corner was eventually cleared by Craig, then Alex put in a good pass to Ben - his shot passed the 'keeper but a defender managed to clear for a corner, which came to nothing. Hamble attacked down the left and despite Mansel defending in numbers a low, hard shot from just outside the area found its way into the corner of the net (24). Hamble kept up the pressure and got their third when Mansel failed to clear a corner (31). Sam and Aidan went close; a couple more Hamble corners scrambled clear; a good move Aaron to Aidan to Marcus brought another save. Mansel then pulled one back right on half time - a good run and centre by Ben found Ricky free and he shot home (40).

This time Ben nearly broke straight through, but their 'keeper gathered a loose ball. Another scramble and half-clearance in the Mansel area before Hamble headed just wide, then an attack broken up well by David. Marcus set up Ricky - shot just wide, then Aidan received a good pass from Ben but his shot was saved. Hamble broke in numbers but shot high. Mansel made it 2-3 when a high lob back towards the Hamble goal by Sam bounced over the 'keeper and into the net (52). Mansel then nearly paid the price for not playing to the whistle as the defence all stopped, only for Hamble to shoot just over. Another good clearance by David, good save by Steven and strong tackling by Aaron kept out the next few attacks. A great through ball from Aaron found Ben - his cross was knocked down by their 'keeper, fell to Ricky - shot high. A long run by Ben ended with another shot saved, then Craig, Aaron and Steven somehow combined to beat away another Hamble attack. A through ball from Aidan found Ben, who this time found the net for the equaliser (64). Hamble pressed forward and quickly regained the lead when a Mansel defender mis-judged the bounce, allowing the ball to go to an unmarked attacker who scored (66). A perfect cross by Tom was headed over by Jason. Hamble attacking even more and scored their fifth when again outnumbering the mansel defence - a ball into the middle was easily steered home (73). Marcus had a free kick and a shot saved; Hamble failed to add further goals from a succession of corners.

Hamble had the greater number of chances, but Mansel also created some good opportunities. A reasonable performance overall but sloppy defending from the team as a whole still undermines all the good work.
